Fitness Subscriptions/Pass: KFit and ClassPass Review 2019

There were multiple cases in the past couple of years on gyms and spas closing leaving members who had paid upfront fees in a ditch. I feel a little insecure when committing to large sums of money paid upfront. As my parents would say, “钱不容易赚”, which translates to, “it is not easy to earn money.”

Hence, I’ve been an advocate for fitness subscriptions like ClassPass, Guavapass and Kfit for the past couple of years. They offer the flexibility of month-on-month payments and an extremely wide range of classes from member studios. Think of it as a “trial” to your favourite classes.



What is a fitness subscription?

  • Basically, it is a fitness membership on an app with a concept very similar to The Entertainer App. You pay an X amount of money per month to access classes by its member studios
  • As of 14 Jan 2019: There are two dominant players in Singapore: ClassPass and KFit. A prior company, GuavaPass has gotten acquired by ClassPass, you can read more here.
  • In Aug 2018, ClassPass launched in Singapore. As compared to its peer, ClassPass uses a more sophisticated class booking system. Read my ClassPass low down.

ClassPass update: Why I won’t be on ClassPass anytime soon

I’ve had a chance to play around with ClassPass but these are the reasons why I will not be on ClassPass anytime soon.

1. Cancellation notice

As compared to GuavaPass’ cancellation notice of typically 2-4 hours and a late cancellation fee of $5, ClassPass 12-hour late cancellation and a late cancellation fee of $20 hits a sour note for me.

Personally, I work in a fast-paced and team-work based job which makes it hard for me to predict my schedule at times.

2. Fastest fingers first game

With a limited number of slots for classes at the studios, it is a ‘fastest fingers first’ and has resulted in a ‘camping’ syndrome for its members. I have a couple of friends who will just keep refreshing the studio page at a certain timing (when the classes are being released) so that they’d be able to book the class they want.

3. Uniquely Singaporean behaviour

The reason why I like GuavaPass better is that the platform is built in Asia first. Its founding team includes an Asian co-founder and one of the co-founders rightly pointed out that you cannot plug and play US technology in Asia and I cannot agree more.

On the other hand, ClassPass feels like a US app that tries to implement a tried and tested model in US to Singapore.

Why do I say that?

ClassPass’ system without certain safeguards in place has resulted in what I call ‘Uniquely Singaporean’ behaviour. Some of them include booking numerous classes since there is no maximum number of reservations you can hold (and dropping them last minute before you incur a cancellation charge), groups created to swap popular classes and even, peddling class credits (how do you even do this baffles me).

No offence to those who want to maximise their class credits – I’m merely pointing out that this is not something I want nor would do.

ClassPass is still in its early stages though, perhaps, with a few more months of operations, I’m sure its model will tweak. Until then, I’ll be a keen bystander waiting to see its improvements.

It’s finally here! When I heard of ClassPass launching here, I was quite excited. You know I’ve been using GuavaPass for close to three years now and the base model of GuavaPass is the ClassPass business model.

Almost 12 months worth of Vinyasas

Isn’t it cliche to say time flies? It’s been a year of practising yoga for me since I started my journey last Christmas eve, 24 Dec 2015. I purchased my first membership on KFit.

My first class was a Hot Flow class at Space & Light which has sadly closed down and moved into Como Shambhala.

Then in Feb, KFit implemented a 10-class limit per month which saw me hopping over to GuavaPass in March 2016.

Making it a routine

It’s easy to start something new but the challenge comes when you try to keep it going. My method was to incorporate class into my daily routine.

I would normally book a class on the day of or the previous day when my plans for the day firm up. The first cycle of your membership is probably going to be the most exciting and research intensive. There are so many classes to choose from, the large variety can be overwhelming.

It takes a couple of months to settle into the groove. Once you know your favourite studios, it’s a matter of building up a routine that you’re comfortable with.

I like to schedule my classes for the early evenings mostly so that there is still leeway for dinner appointments.

Yoga is not easy

I thought, hey, I’m used to dance training, yoga can’t be that tough.


I was surprised at how hard yoga is. Even now, every class is still a challenge for me. Initially, I had difficulties just sitting through the simplest breathing exercise. My nose was itchy, I needed to fidget and my mind wandered.

Then it was about the stamina of lasting through the class and not giving up on myself. My favourite classes are flow and power classes for the smooth transitions and dynamic holds.

Learning from different masters

This is probably my favourite aspect about GuavaPass: the ability to studio hop at ease without the financial strain needing to purchase multiple packages.

At this point, I can’t imagine needing to commit to a single studio because I enjoy many different instructors’ classes: flowing with breath at Strala, toning it down with Stretch Flow at YoCo Loft and stretching it out on the Yoga Wheel at Level.

Keeping the mind calm and body going

Amidst all the worries, yoga was probably the thing that kept my mind calm and at ease. When I step on the mat, it is an hour of solitude and absolute presence I am dedicating to myself – something I need to balance out the chaos.

I try to hit 3-5 classes a week so as to maximise my membership and also that, I felt this was the most optimum number for me. Any lesser and I’d feel like I can’t keep up with the flow.

In 2017…

I hope to keep my Vinyasas going and start to challenge myself by going for more intermediate and inversion classes. It’s been almost a year of going to classes solo, I also want to try to make a few yoga friends in the new year – how nice it’d be to have someone to grab dinner (or help me snap pictures).

GuavaPass so far: 3 months checkpoint and my favourite Yoga studios

I’ve always been an active person, constantly moving and thinking ahead of my next step. When I made a decision to introduce fitness back into my life, last Christmas, I felt that Yoga and Pilates will be complements to dancing.

I wasn’t ready to sign on a studio membership. Have you seen the number of studios that have closed down without much notice in the last year? Boutique studios, Sadhana Sanctuary, Space & Light and BYCH have closed their doors and even chains, True Yoga has shuttered one outlet and Viva Fit has stopped operations in four outlets with two remaining franchise outlets. I don’t think I want to deal with having to seek mediation if a studio that I signed with closed down.

In come with fitness subscriptions which I am an advocate of. Long story short, you have access to a limited number of classes in its partner studios. I have been on GuavaPass for three months so far and I attend mostly yoga classes.

The Not So Goods

Class cancellations

This has proved to be the biggest challenge for me so far. Most class cancellations require a 12-hour notice. For example, a 7.30pm class needs to be cancelled by 7.30am. Say bye to spontaneous dinner appointments or incur a $15 cancellation charge. Worse, a no show costs you $20.

Partner studio changes

You need to be prepared that your favourite classes may not be available. My favourite Pilates Reformer classes at R-Evolution were stopped when the studio closed down. Likewise, I only attended one Music Flow at Singapore School of Meditation and Yoga and was looking forward to more.

The Good Stuff

The user intuitive website

I prefer booking classes on the GuavaPass desktop website for its user-friendly interface. Then again, I am mostly desk-bound with frequent desktop access. The mobile app is convenient for last minute class bookings.

Last minute class bookings

From what I have observed, class bookings typically close an hour before the class, subject to availability of course. There have also been instances where last minute slots for popular classes open up.

My favourite yoga studios

I used to attend 3-5 classes a week but have dropped to 2-4 classes with my current dance rehearsal schedule. These are some of my favourite studios. I grew up on a staple diet of dance classes since young. Yoga is not my main form of exercise but complements my dance training. I find myself gravitating towards flow and power classes for the dynamic movements.

Updog Studio (East Coast)*

Update: Aug 2016, Updog is no longer a GuavaPass partner. Leaving this here for whoever finds it useful.

I am an Eastie and the location of the studio is easily accessible for me. My favourites are the Hot Flow and Hot Hatha classes. Coupled that with the beautiful full-length windows and breezy dressing rooms/showers, the full studio experience is always enjoyable.

Strala (Boat Quay)

The feel of Strala’s classes is quite different from other yoga classes I have attended. Strala is founded by Tara Stiles who is known for being a yoga rebel. The studio follows her style, which is flow based where one moves with ease from poses to poses.

Perhaps as a dancer before a yogi, the easy flow of poses resonates with me. My favourite Strala class is Strong – similar to that of power yoga. Expect inversions and hand stands in Strong classes.

Ziva (Tiong Bahru)

Ziva is the Sanskrit word for bliss and the studio is aptly named. I feel at ease whenever I attend class at Ziva. It is unpretentious and homely. Each class is 75 minutes, you don’t feel like you rush through the closing sequences.

The studio is also centrally located in Tiong Bahru, easily accessible from CBD.

Avante (Raffles Place)

The studio is famed for the Dianamic yoga class which is named after its founder Diana but I’ve yet to try her class.

Friday night is an unpopular slot for classes, I supposed most people would want to go for dates, drinks and wind down for the weekend. Avante has a unique 8.30pm Friday night class. The instructor, Angela, is known to push you to your limits. Expect physical adjustments. I almost hobbled out of my first class.

Alpha Balance (Multiple locations)

This is the Canvass studio. Alpha Balance is a dedicated collective of yoga and pilates instructors with classes across multiple locations.

There is a Wednesday 1.5 hour Vinyasa Flow class which really tests your endurance. It is a test of mind over body.

Bonus: Glow Yoga (Holland Village)

Flow at Glow Yoga was quite an intriguing experience. This was possibly, the most spiritual class I have attended and may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

A home studio within the instructor’s home, the space is filled with precious stones and knick knacks from travels. The instructor, Amy, did some incense twirling and ringing of bells to cleanse the room’s energy. It was an enlightening experience for me, Glow is like another “branch” of yoga seldom seen and experienced in Singapore. If you’re comfortable with yoga with a tinge of spirituality, try Amy’s class for a fresh perspective.


New exercise options

I’m doing an average of five hours of dance per week and I’m thinking of supplementing my exercise schedule with something that will aid in strengthening my core. This something has got to be affordable, something I like enough to keep me focused and disciplined to keep going and near enough so that I don’t feel cranky travelling.

I’m thinking of:

1. Yoga classes
2. Swimming
3. Pole acrobatics/fitness
4. Circus/Aerial
5. Aqua Aerobics

Will add on if I think of more.
